Protect Your Family

When I moved into my current home, I almost immediately noticed the roaches. While the place wasn’t overrun with them, I saw them far too often. For a few years, my husband and I tried almost every anti-roach product available on the market. We would enjoy success for a short duration. However, the roaches always came back. Then, a wonderful thing happened. We hired a pest control company to spray our home for termites. As a bonus, the chemicals used to prevent termites got rid of our roach issue. If you want to protect your family from harmful roaches, contact a local pest control entity today. On this blog, you will learn how to rid your home of roaches for good with the help of a pest control specialist.

Flying Ants Or Termites? 2 Questions To Ask Yourself When Trying To Tell The Difference

Jennie Lucas

If you have noticed a swarm of flying insects around the entrance to your home's crawl space, you may wonder whether or not they are flying ants or termites. If so, ask yourself the following questions to help you determine the differences between the two insects.

What Body Shape Do the Insects Have?

The first question you should ask yourself when investigating the type of insects swarming around your crawl space is about the body shape. While both kinds of insects have wings at this stage in their development, they have distinct body contours that can help you determine their species.

To check the body shape of your insects, try to get one of them to land on a surface next to you. Or, if you are brave, put your arm into the swarm so that one of them can land on you. Look closely at the bugs. If they have a segmented body, they are flying ants.

However, if it appears as though their body is all one piece, these are most likely flying termites. If this is the case, they are scoping out your crawl space to see if it is a suitable environment for their new colony.

Where Are the Bugs Congregating?

If you do not like to get near bugs or cannot access the swarm easily, you can also determine their species by asking yourself about their location. Where are the bugs congregating? Are they swarming around a rotting piece of fruit from one of your trees? Or, do they only seem interested in your home's structure?

If the insects are more interested in the fruit, these are most likely flying ants. Since ants love sugary foods, they would be drawn to fruit.

However, if they are only flying around the wood inside your crawl space and acting as if it would make a great meal, these are flying termites. If so, you should contact a termite control service to have them investigate the situation further before the termites shed their wings and start to dig in.

After answering the above questions, you may determine that the flying insects swarming around your home are termites who are paving the way for an infestation. If so, contact a pest control service that provides termite control so they can inspect your crawl space and discuss your options for keeping the bugs from eating the wood, as well as getting rid of any that are already present.
